HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
  • A foreigner may import used household goods and personal effects into Bangladesh duty free if he or she is a Privileged Person. A Privileged Person is defined as a foreign diplomat, an employee of a UN agency, some NGO employees, or a foreign company which has a contract with the Bangladesh government that specifically states their employees are such.
  • In the case of a Privileged Person, he or she must obtain a Customs Pass Book.
  • The shippers employer must apply for the passbook when the shipper first arrives in Bangladesh. The application process normally takes at least 25-30 days. The passbook must be issued in order for the shipment to be cleared duty-free.
  • Thus, we strongly recommend that you hold shipments at origin until the shipper receives his/her passbook.
  • All other foreigners and returning Bangladesh nationals, who do not meet the above criteria, may import household goods and personal effects into Bangladesh, but they will be subject to duty. The duty amount varies from item to item
  • The shipper must be in Bangladesh at the time of clearance as the original passport is required by customs. Also Original Bill of lading (all 3 originals) must be couriered to the JVK office, OBL copies are not accepted.
  • Clearance time for FCL shipments is normally 5 working days and 3 working days for air shipments.
  • LCL shipments often take up to two weeks from arrival before they are made available for clearance by the port authority. Please plan accordingly for this delay.
  • Please ensure that the shippers name, as shown all packages and documents, is the same as shown in his/her passport. Otherwise, delays with customs may occur.
  • As Bangladesh typically has very strong monsoons, please ensure that the shipments are adequately waterproofed.
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
  • Goods prohibited from entering Bangladesh include firearms, ammunition, pornographic material, gambling instruments, narcotics, and subversive literature.
  • Never mix household goods and personal effects with commercial cargo. Office furniture, stationary, and office machinery are considered commercial cargo. The importation of commercial cargo is very complex and will delay the import of household goods. If you are not sure, please ask JVK.
MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)
  • Diplomats and Privileged Persons may import a vehicle into Bangladesh duty free.
  • Vehicles must be less than 3 years old.
  • All other foreigners and Bangladesh nationals may import a motor vehicle into Bangladesh, but it will be subject to duty. Also, the process is long and tedious, so there will be port storage of at least one month. This is approximately Usd 750.00 per month. The duty is approximately 100% of the new value of the vehicle (as determined by Bangladesh Customs).
ANIMALS AND PETS
  • Most pets, including dogs, cats, and birds, can be brought into Bangladesh with no quarantine period. The documents necessary at the time of import are a current health certificate (not more than 7 days old), a current vaccination card and a letter of no objection from the Bangladesh government.

CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
  • A foreigner may import household goods and personal effects into Cambodia duty free under the following conditions:
    1. He or she has diplomatic status or works for an NVO
    2. He or she obtains a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs verifying number one above and requesting customs to permit duty free import.
  • All other foreigners and returning Khmer nationals, who do not meet the above criteria, may import household goods and personal effects into Cambodia, but they will be subject to duty. The duty amount varies and is often subject to negotiation with the customs department. JVK will work with the shipper and his/her company to minimize any duty liability.
  • The original passport is required to clear air shipments, so the shipper should be in Cambodia when the air shipment arrives. For sea shipments, Cambodia customs accepts only a copy of the passport for clearance.
  • Finally, the shippers company must be registered in Cambodia and they must issue a letter, on company letter head, stating that he or she is coming to work in Cambodia, describing briefly what job he or she will perform. JVK has a standard format for this and will work with the shippers company to obtain it.
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
  • Goods prohibited from entering Cambodia include firearms, ammunition, pornographic material, food, alcohol, medicine and short wave radios.
MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)
  • A foreigner may import a motor vehicle into Cambodia duty free under the following conditions:

    2. He or she obtains a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs verifying number one above an requesting customs to permit duty free import.
  • All other foreigners may import a motor vehicle into Cambodia, but it will be subject to duty. Also, the process is long and tedious, so there will be port storage of at least one month. This is approximately Usd 750.00 per month. The duty is approximately 100% of the new value of the auto (as determined by Cambodia Customs).
  • A returning Khmer national may import a motor vehicle into Cambodia, but it will be subject to duty. The parameter outlined in the previous paragraph will also apply.
  • All autos must be left-hand drive.
ANIMALS AND PETS
  • Most pets, including dogs, cats, and birds, can be brought into Cambodia with no quarantine period. The documents necessary at the time of import are a current health certificate (not more than 7 days old) and a current vaccination card.

CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

Expatriates must be working for a registered company and hold a valid work/residence permit. One air and one sea shipment only can be imported. Shipper must obtain PUBD (Personal Unaccompanied Baggage Declaration) form at airport on his arrival in Accra. Shipments ought to arrive within three months of work/residence permit being issued. Shipper’s original passport and work permit will be required for clearance. Any new items must be declared and will be dutiable.

Original rated OBL, valued packing list, Individual Tax Identification Number plus receipts for new items are required for clearance. Even if shipment is duty free a tax off approximately 2% of CIF value is levied on all shipments. All import FCL shipments MUST show an Advanced Shipment Information (ASHI) number on OBL. This needs to be obtained at port of origin. Shipments that arrive in Ghana without an ASHI number CANNOT be cleared. An ASHI number can be obtained for each shipment online at www.antaser.com

All shipments are inspected by both Customs and Quarantine Department. All shipments take time to clear and demurrage is inevitable. Depending of the shipment it might need to be offloaded into bonded warehouse in the port area. High bonded warehouse/handling charges apply and are EXCLUDED in our rates. Shipments can only be released after both Customs and Quarantine have approved release. Shipments will be inspected separately by both departments at a time of their choosing.

Diplomats require duty free certificate issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs whilst UN/NGO/AID employees require duty free certificate issued by their sponsor government department. Again, demurrage is very likely.

All shipments must be ISPM15 compliant. Additional quarantine charges might apply if shipments aren’t compliant.

Sea shipments take upto 30 days to clear and air upto 10 days. High demurrage is likely on all shipments.

Most shipping lines charge a container bond prior to release of the container from the port. This fee is excluded from our rates and will be collected from shipper. Once the container is returned the shipping line will refund the bond paid less any fees they decide for damage/cleaning. As they control the bond money JVK has little influence over this and most shipping lines inevitably find a reason to not refund the entire bond amount. It can take up to 3 months for the bond to be returned. The bond fee varies but is approx US$500/20ft and US$1000/40ft.

It is not unusual for the multiple agencies involved in the clearance process to seek unofficial payments from shippers especially if they believe there has been an infringement of the customs regulations. Whilst JVK will do it’s best to avoid this we do not guarantee that it wont happen and will work with all parties involved to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS

Never mix personal effects with commercial goods.

Generally pornography, guns, fireworks, narcotics, gambling instruments and subversive or offensive literature are banned .

MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)

Non diplomats can import cars duty free as long as shipper has owned/used for a minimum 12 months at origin. Bill of Sale and current insurance paperwork are required as proof of ownership and use. However, the process to clear is long and demurrage will be incurred.

    2. His or her goods enter Indonesia within 3 months of his/her initial arrival in Indonesia.

  • All other foreigners and returning Indonesians, who do not meet the above criteria, may import household goods and personal effects into Indonesia, but they will be subject to duty. The duty amount varies and is often subject to negotiation with the customs department. JVK will work with the shipper and his/her company to minimize any duty liability.

Please scan or fax a valued inventory and shippers contact details in Myanmar before sending the shipment. Once the import permit is obtained, JVK will advise that it is ok to send the shipment. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a fine of no less than 30% of the value of the goods.
  • Please ensure that the shippers name, as written on all packages and documents, is the same as shown in his/her passport. Otherwise delays with customs may occur.
  • LCL shipments often take up to three weeks from arrival before they are made available from clearance by the Myanmar Port Authority. Please advise your shippers accordingly.
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
  • Goods prohibited from entering Myanmar include firearms, ammunition, pornographic material, and all communications equipment. This includes satellite dishes, receivers, fax machines, phones, switchboards, walkie-talkies, shortwave radios, etc. Any such items found in a household goods shipment will be confiscated, and the shipper will be fined.
  • Any antiques imported should be declared to the Ministry of Archeology upon importation, otherwise re-export will be a problem. Photographs would be helpful.
  • Video tapes and DVDs will be censored by the Ministry of Information. A fee, or approximately US$ 5.00 per tape or DVD, is levied by the Ministry and will be collected from the shipper.
MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)
  • Only a foreign diplomat may import a vehicle into Myanmar duty free.
  • Private individuals are not allowed to import vehicles.
ANIMALS AND PETS
  • Most pets, including dogs, cats, and birds, can be brought into Myanmar with no quarantine period. The documents necessary at the time of import are a current health certificate (not more than 7 days old) and a current vaccination card.

CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
  • A foreigner may import used household goods and personal effects into Nepal duty free if he or she has diplomatic status or works for a registered aid organization. For customs clearance we require:
    1. The shippers employer must provide JVK with an official letter verifying his/her employment status and authorizing JVK to handle the shipment on their behalf. There is a standard format for this letter and JVK can advise how to make it.
    2. Copies of the employers investment license and business license will also be required for non-diplomats.
    3. Original bills of Lading, packing list and passport copy.
  • If the above criteria are met, only one sea and one air shipment are permitted duty free.
  • While the shipper does not have to be in Nepal at the time of clearance, photocopies of passport along with the above documents are needed prior to shipment arrival.
  • Original bills of lading are required by Nepal customs, please send by courier to our Kathmandu office prior to vessel arrival at Kolkata port.
  • As sea shipments first enter India before being transported in-bond to Nepal, please ensure that the bill of lading shows In-transit to Kathmandu, Nepal via Kolkata, India.
  • For FCL shipment, please ensure that your carrier will provide 21 days free time with the container. We normally require 15-20 days for clearance, linehaul to Kathmandu and return of empty container to Kolkata port. PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
  • Goods prohibited from entering Nepal include firearms, ammunition, and pornographic material.

Lagos, Nigeria.

E-mail: nigeria@jvkafrica.com
CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
  • Expatriates must be working for a registered company and hold a valid work/residence permit and have a Nigerian Federal Tax Identity Number (TIN). One air and one sea shipment only can be imported duty free but duty will be levied on new items or items deemed in excessive quantities for personal needs. Shipments ought to arrive within three months of work/residence permit being issued. Shipper’s original passport and work permit will be required for clearance. Any new items must be declared and will be dutiable.

The TIN is very important. Without it the shipment CANNOT be cleared. However for a variety of reasons the TIN might not have been issued before the shippers shipment arrives. In this instance a temporary “one time use” TIN can be obtained at an extra charge of US$275.

  • All shipments are inspected by both Customs and Quarantine Department. All shipments take time to clear and demurrage is inevitable. Depending on the shipment it might need to be offloaded into bonded warehouse in the port area. High bonded warehouse/handling charges apply and are EXCLUDED in our rates. Shipments can only be released after both Customs and Quarantine have approved release. Shipments will be inspected separately by both departments at a time of their choosing.

See below comments regarding the restrictions on importing furniture.

For any shipper that does not fulfill these criteria the entire shipment will be subject to high import duty at varying rates.

High demurrage likely on all shipments.

There are two main ports in Lagos ( Apapa and Tin Can) as well as numerous overflow terminals. All are heavily congested. Clearing times vary and cannot be predicted. Often containers are offloaded at the overflow terminals due to space constraints but the containers still needed to be transferred to the main port for clearance. Often the transport costs for this extra trucking is billed to the consignee and is NOT included in our rates.

The traffic in Lagos is also heavily congested as such it is very hard to guarantee definite delivery times in a day with the shipper as transport times are out of our control.

The bond fee varies but is approx US$500-1000/20ft and US$1000-2000/40ft.

Important Notes:

  1. Please be advised that customer should be present during customs inspection and during container extract from the port except for the diplomatic shipment
  2. Foreigners are no more allowed to pay taxes for missing docs, so all docs must be complete, otherwise the shipment will be blocked at the port.
  3. No shipment shall be dispatched without our green light
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS

Never mix personal effects with commercial goods.

The importation of any kind of furniture into Nigeria is not permitted – high penalties are incurred if any furniture is shipped. If furniture is not declared and is found in the shipment the shipper will be required to pay a high fine, will run the risk of having the entire shipment confiscated and will be required to personally explain why it was shipped. This is a situation best avoided so DO NOT ship any furniture.

Generally pornography, guns, fireworks, narcotics, gambling instruments and subversive or offensive literature are banned .

MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)

Non diplomats cannot import cars duty free. Bill of Sale and current insurance paperwork are required as proof of ownership and use.

ANIMALS AND PETS

    2. His or her goods enter Thailand within 6 months of his/her initial arrival in Thailand
    3. His or her good arrive from the country where he/she lived previously for one year.
  • If the above criteria are met, only one sea and one air shipment are permitted duty free, and the shipper can only import one each of any electrical appliance duty free.
  • A returning Thai national may import his or her household goods and personal effects into Thailand duty free, so long as he/she can prove residence abroad for over one year continuously and the goods arrive from the country where he/she have been living. Again, only one air and one sea are permitted duty free, and one each of any electrical appliance duty free.
  • All other foreigners and returning Thais, who do not meet the above criteria, may import household goods and personal effects into Thailand, but they will be subject to duty. The duty amount varies and is often subject to negotiation with the customs department. JVK will work with the shipper and his/her company to minimize any duty liability.
  • While the shipper does not have to be physically present at the port or airport during customs clearance, we must present his/her original passport and original one year work permit (or diplomatic certificate) to the Thai Customs Authorities at the time of clearance. Thus, the shipper must be in Thailand for the shipment to clear through customs. A returning Thai national must present both his/her current passport and his/her previously expired passport.

  • If pets are sent as cargo, duty will be assessed at roughly US$ 400.00 per animal, though this may vary depending upon the type and size of the pet. If pets are brought as excess baggage, no duty is normally assessed.

JVK will work with the shipper and his/her company to minimize any duty liability.
  • While the shipper does not have to be physically present in Timor Leste during customs clearance, we must present a copy of his or her passport to the Timor Leste government at the time of clearance. Also, should any issued arise, it is best if the shipper is in-country to assist.
  • Timor Leste is a young country. As such, regulations often change and with little notice. It is best to contact JVK Prior to shipping in order to ensure there are no significant changes to the regulations above.
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
  • Goods prohibited from entering Timor Leste include firearms, ammunition, pornographic material, and narcotics
MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)
  • Only a diplomat may import a vehicle into Timor Leste duty free. His or her organization must send a letter, similar in format to the one for household goods, to the Customs Department requesting duty free import.
  • All other foreigners and Timorese nationals may import a motor vehicle into Timor Leste, but it will be subject to duty. The present regulations use a formula that multiplies the cc of vehicle by Usd 2.00, with a minimum amount of Usd 200.00 per vehicle. Again, because regulations change often and with little notice, it is wise to ask JVK before shipping.
ANIMALS AND PETS
  • Most pets, including dogs, cats, and birds, can be brought into Timor Leste with no quarantine period. The documents necessary at the time of import are a current health certificate (not more than 7 days old) and a current vaccination card.
